When most people think about Medicare, they think about coverage for doctor visits, hospital stays, prescriptions, and medical treatment. But Medicare also provides access to a wide range of preventive services designed to help beneficiaries stay healthier and identify potential health concerns earlier.
Understanding these benefits can help you get more value from your Medicare coverage—and may help you have better conversations with your healthcare providers throughout the year.
Medicare Is About More Than Treating Illness
Preventive healthcare focuses on identifying health risks before they become more serious.
Medicare Part B covers numerous preventive and screening services, including certain exams, vaccines, laboratory tests, screenings, counseling, and health-monitoring programs.
Depending on eligibility and other Medicare requirements, preventive services may include:
- Cardiovascular disease screenings
- Diabetes screenings
- Colorectal cancer screenings
- Mammograms
- Prostate cancer screenings
- Lung cancer screenings
- Bone mass measurements
- Glaucoma screenings
- Depression screenings
- Certain vaccinations
- Tobacco-use counseling
- Obesity behavioral therapy
- Medical nutrition therapy
- Medicare Diabetes Prevention Program services
Many Medicare-covered preventive services have no out-of-pocket cost when eligibility requirements are met and the service is received from a healthcare provider who accepts Medicare assignment. However, coverage, frequency requirements, and potential costs can vary by service.
The “Welcome to Medicare” Preventive Visit
If you are new to Medicare Part B, one benefit worth knowing about is the “Welcome to Medicare” preventive visit.
Medicare covers this one-time visit during the first 12 months that you have Part B.
The visit can include a review of your medical and social history, certain measurements and screenings, information about recommended preventive services and vaccines, and the development of a written plan for future screenings.
One important distinction: the “Welcome to Medicare” visit is not the same thing as a traditional comprehensive physical examination.
Knowing the difference can help avoid confusion when scheduling an appointment with your healthcare provider.
What Is the Medicare Annual Wellness Visit?
After you have had Medicare Part B for more than 12 months, you may qualify for a yearly Medicare Wellness Visit.
The Annual Wellness Visit is designed to help create or update a personalized prevention plan based on your health and individual risk factors.
Your healthcare provider may review areas such as:
- Your medical and family history
- Current medications
- Blood pressure and other basic measurements
- Your ability to perform everyday activities
- Fall and safety risks
- Potential cognitive concerns
- Recommended screenings
- Preventive services you may need in the future
The goal is not simply to look at where your health stands today. It is to develop a strategy for maintaining your health in the years ahead.
An Annual Wellness Visit Is Not an Annual Physical
This is an important Medicare distinction.
A traditional routine physical examination is generally not covered by Original Medicare as a preventive benefit. The Medicare Annual Wellness Visit focuses primarily on health risk assessment, prevention planning, and recommended screenings rather than providing a traditional head-to-toe physical examination.
Some Medicare Advantage plans may provide additional benefits beyond what Original Medicare covers, so beneficiaries should review the details of their individual plan.
Additionally, if your healthcare provider performs diagnostic tests or treats an existing or newly identified medical condition during a preventive visit, those additional services may result in deductibles, copayments, or coinsurance.
When scheduling an appointment, it can be helpful to ask the provider’s office exactly what type of visit is being scheduled.
Your Healthcare Needs Can Change—and So Can Your Medicare Needs
Preventive care is only one part of the Medicare picture.
As you move through retirement, your prescriptions, doctors, healthcare needs, travel habits, budget, and personal priorities may change.
At the same time, Medicare plan benefits, provider networks, formularies, premiums, deductibles, and other costs can change from one year to another.
That is why Medicare shouldn’t necessarily be viewed as a decision you make once and then forget about.
An occasional review of your Medicare coverage can help determine whether your current coverage continues to fit your situation.
Questions to Consider About Your Medicare Coverage
As you review your healthcare and Medicare needs, consider asking:
Are my doctors still participating in my plan?
Are my prescriptions still covered appropriately?
Have my copayments or other out-of-pocket costs changed?
Am I taking advantage of the preventive services available to me?
Have my healthcare needs changed during the past year?
Does my current Medicare coverage still make sense for my situation?
These are simple questions, but they can lead to an important conversation.
Medicare Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated
Medicare offers valuable healthcare coverage, but understanding how all the pieces work together can sometimes feel overwhelming.
You don’t have to navigate those decisions alone.
An experienced Medicare insurance professional can help you understand your available options, compare coverage, and determine which choices may be appropriate for your individual needs and budget.
